Choosing a Good Domain Name is Very Important!

Make it Memorable - Make sure that your domain name is one that is easy to remember and makes an impact. It should be easy and straight forward. Not everyone saves web addresses in their "favorites" and you want them to come back again easily.

Keep it Short and Sweet - Twenty characters is the maximum that you should use for a good domain name, ten is even better. A long and complicated domain name is not going to help you!

Choose your Extensions - There are several domain extensions available ( .com, .net, .org, .tv, .info, .gov, etc. ) Some of these are more memorable than others; .com is the best by far, because it is the most widely used, while .net is the second best. Most people will type .com before they will try .net if they don't know which extension you use.

Note: The type of extension you use might also depend on the type of website. For example, .gov is reserved specifically for government websites, .org is typically used by non-profit organizations, and .info extensions are generally used for informational websites.

Watch your Spelling - Having a difficult to spell domain name could cause you some trouble. If your domain name is hard to spell, viewers may end up at a competitor's website. A good domain name is easy to pronounce, has words or letters that are used in everyday language, and does not contain foreign words that may be difficult to for local viewers.

Explain Yourself - A good domain name should be descriptive and self-explanatory. When people see your domain name they should be able to tell what they are going to find behind it. A great domain would be your company name such as bigforkweb.com.

Avoid Symbols - Avoid using numbers or hyphens within your domain name. These are difficult to relay verbally, and many people will ignore the symbols.

Consider a 2nd - If you wish to use initials, dashes, keywords or other more complex domain names for search engine purposes, consider registering those as well and using them as your "secondary domains" while using the simple, memorable URL as your "primary domain" which all other domains are forwarded to. It is also a good idea to get a secondary plural domain if you have a company name that ends with a noun. People naturally like to add an "s" to the end of a domain. For example, if you had a company called Green Airplane and your domain was greenairplane.com, you would probably want to also get the domain greenairplanes.com.
